overview

The system has a menu at the top (main, Content, Extensions…) and for each section, a list of options on the page.

Pages are edited by selecting the "content" section, "pages"

Pages are listed like an outline. Each section of the outline can be open displayed or closed using the triangle icon. Click the triangle icon to show more items in that section.

* To edit an existing page, click the page name. * To create a new page click the "add new content" link above the page list

adding information from other sources

You may want to add info on a page from a source on your computer like a word document or excel file. It appears that you can copy and paste from MS Word, but don't. It turns out that MS Word generates HTML code that is not compatible with our system and perhaps with several other browsers. It's best to turn it into 'plain text' before doing this.

To get text that is in a word document into the CMS.

  • Open the file in Word.
  • Save As : and change the 'type' to text only. The new file should have an extension "txt" All of your formatting will be lost.
  • click start, click run, and type notepad
  • in Notepad, open the file menu, click open and find your text file.
  • Once found and loaded, Edit - Select All and Edit - Copy
  • switch to firefox, select the page to edit. right click and paste in the spot you want it to go. Now format away.

transferring a page from the old site

these instructions are specific to faculty pages to get us started

  • this is known to work using Firefox but IE is not tested. These instructions are specific to windows
  • open two (or more) browser windows
    • first, open the CMS editor ( http://aves.zoology.msu.edu/admin ). open the CMS content section and select 'pages.'
    • open a new window (Browser menu File, New windows, or press ctrl + N) open the old website http://www.zoology.msu.edu
    • in these instructions, [cms] = The editor window and [old] = old site window
  • [old] On the old site, find the page you want to copy. Copy just the title of the page (highlight and press ctrl + c)
  • [cms] On the CMS editor windows, Click "add new content" and begin filling in the form
    • Content type : content (default)
    • Title : paste the title you just copied
    • Menu : usually shortened title but just paste the title again
    • Parent : select the section in which this new page goes. For faculty summaries, that would be Research - All Faculty
    • Template : for most pages, select 'zoology standard', but some may have a special template
    • content … wait – go the next step
  • [old] switch windows back to the old site (Alt+Tab). Highlight the text on the page just under the title. Don't highlight the whole page, the menu on the left side, or any grey text on the bottom of the page. Highlight only text/content specific to the topic on the page. Copy to clipboard (ctrl + c)
  • [cms] switch back to the cms. click inside the first content box, paste using ctrl+v The buttons for pasting will not work without modifying your computer. The text should be formatted similarly to the old page. If not, you may have to try to cut and paste again.
  • [cms] You may have to adjust the formatting to new guidelines. For faculty pages, change the persons 'title' from h2 to p. Changing some lines from single to double space, changing bolding or style.
  • [cms] click the options tab. for faculty pages, uncheck the "show in menu" option.
  • [cms] click 'submit' to save the new page.
  • [cms] Add this new page to the lists of faculty.
    • NOTE: since the CMS system does not account for multiple editors all working on the same page at once, I recommend editing the all faculty page at one time or by one person.
    • edit the page "all faculty, " and find the faculty member name.
    • If the name is underlined, it points to the old site. Highlight the whole name and press the broken chain button (remove link).
    • Now link it to the new page. Highlight the name press the orange palm tree icon to show the list of pages. Find the new page in the list and press 'ok'
