Funding Sources

The MSU Graduate School

The Graduate Schools maintains a "Funding Opportunities" web site which provides links to literally hundreds of funding sources for support of graduate students and their research. The following sites may be of particular interest:
Funding opportunities on the Graduate School website
Funding and other resources for minority students

Support of graduate student travel

The graduate school also has limited funding (up to $400) available to support graduate student travel for presentaiton of research, assistance in emergency situations, etc. The graduate secretary in the Zoology Department office has application details.

All University business related travel (seminars, conferences, field research, etc.) must be authorized in advance of departure. Contact Sue Platte before travel at 432-9817 or by email at plattes@msu.edu.

Graduate School Incentive Fellowships ($9000)

These fellowships are available for those graduate students who have recently or about to submit a proposal for fellowship support worth at least $9000 to any of several extramural funding agencies(eg. NSF, Howard Hughes, US Defense Department, etc). Anyone who applies for an incentive fellowship will get $100. However, the sole actual winner of the $9000 fellowship will be selected each semester by lottery from the pool of applicants. Further information is available from the office of the Dean of the Graduate School.

Still more funding information useful for grad students can be found at the web site maintained by the office of the Vice President for Research and Graduate Studies.

Finally, MSU has a good electronic funding database at the main library.
