The following groups include your Zoology Graduate Student representatives to departmental, college, and university committees. Your representatives are the people you should contact if you wish to see changes effected in policies or programs administered by their respective committees.
Graduate Affairs Committee:
The graduate affairs committee reviews all applications for admission to the Zoology Department, and makes recommendations for admissions to the department chair. This committee also periodically reviews departmental policy regarding academic requirements for grad students, and makes recommendations for policy changes to the Zoology faculty, who vote on these recommendations.
This committee monitors undergraduate programs and course requirements for the Zoology major. This committee also periodically reviews departmental policy regarding academic requirements for undergraduate students, and makes recommendations for policy changes to the Zoology faculty, who vote on these recommendations.
Representative to attend Zoology faculty meetings:
The Zoology faculty usually meets from 3-5 p.m. on the second Tuesday of each month during the academic year to deal with departmental business. The grad rep attends these meetings to share graduate student perspectives with the faculty, and to learn about significant developments of interest to the other grad students in the Department.
Representative to CNS Dean’s Student Advisory Council:
This council advises the dean of the College of Natural Science, Dr James Kirkpatrick, about policy decisions at the college level.
Representative at MSU Council of Graduate Students:
The Council of Graduate Students (COGS) meets monthly to discuss policy decisions affecting all grad students within the university.
This individual serves as departmental liason to the Graduate Employees Union (GEU). The steward communicates union news to the current TAs in Zoology, communicates the concerns of Zoology TAs to the GEU, and participates in GEU policy decisions. A graduate student must currently be appointed as a Teaching Assistant in Zoology to serve as Steward.
