Journalism student's article on petrel project in Hawaii featured as an NSF 'Discovery' story, and in LiveScience magazine

08/15/08

Matthew Cimitile is a journalism student who accompanied zoology professors Peggy Ostrom and Nathaniel Ostrom to Hawaii to participate in fieldwork for a project involving the Hawaiian Petrel, an endangered seabird. His article is featured as a Discovery story for the National Science Foundation, as well as in LiveScience magazine.

Cimitile joined the Ostroms, who are involved in a collaboration with Smithsonian Institution scientists Helen James and Robert Fleischer, in an exploration through caves and lava tubes in search of extinct bird bones. The bones provide a historical record of Hawaii's natural environment and can help find clues to preserving the future of many native Hawaiian species.
