PURL program featured in MSU Alumni Magazine

A "rare gem," the MSU PURL program offers undergraduate students a unique opportunity to get a real taste of scientific research, right at the beginning of their time at MSU.
The question, "is scientific research right for me?" is answered through the program's eight one-hour seminars, field trips to Michigan research facilities, job shadowing, and laboratory rotation opportunities -- all providing PURL students a chance to see if scientific research is a good fit for them.
Designed especially for first-year students with little or no exposure to the life sciences, the PURL program, under the direction of Zoology assistant professor Alex Shingleton, can give a previously "non-science" bound student opportunities to work in the field of scientific research. Guidance from PURL professors such as Dr. Shingleton, Dr. Heather Eisthen (Zoology department) and other faculty, round out the four-year academic program.
"At the end of the program," says Shingleton, "PURL students are equipped with a research experience which will make them highly competitive for a position at graduate school."
