Repeating courses
REPEATABLE and PASSING GRADES
A student may repeat a course in which s/he earned a 0.0, 1.0 or 1.5. For more information, see Academic Programs. Go to "General Information, Policies, Procedures and Regulations,
"then "General Procedures and Regulations,
"then "Repeating a Course."
1.0 and 1.5 are passing grades. You do not have to repeat the class unless you wish to do so.
Only a 0.0 is truly a failing grade. You do not get credit for the class with 0.0.
DECIDING to Repeat
You may repeat any class in which you received a 0.0, 1.0 or 1.5.
Some isssues to consider with repeating a class:
- whether you need the knowledge in the course to go on to a later course;
- what your transcript will show [see below];
- effect on your GPA [see below],
....If you choose to repeat, bear in mind a few things:
- You may not exceed 20 repeat credits at MSU.
- You may wish to repeat a class if it is a prerequisite for something else. The lower grade may indicate that you do not have adequate background for the next course up.
- If you received a 1.0 or 1.5, you passed the class. When you retake it, you will be paying for 3 crs [or however many credits the course is] but the 3 crs will not be added to your total [e.g. if you are taking 12 crs that semester, only 9 crs will add on to your cumulative total].
- If you repeat the course at MSU, the grade will be removed and the new grade substituted in your GPA calculation after you successfully complete the course again. But the original course and grade will always be on your transcript as material completed for that term.
- You may repeat a course in transfer. [Remember you may only transfer a course from a community college until you reach 56 crs. here at MSU. After 56 crs., you must take the course at a 4-year school.] The grade will be removed from your MSU GPA calculation when you successfully complete the course again AND it has transferred. But the original course and grade will always be on your transcript as material completed for that term. Grades DO NOT transfer with courses so the only change in your GPA will be from removing the previous grade. You also must earn at least a 2.0 in the class in order to transfer it.
GPA
- You need a 2.0 GPA [grade point AVERAGE] from all ZOL classes to graduate. Therefore, if you have higher grades in other classes to compensate in the GPA calculation, you do not have to repeat unless you wish to do so.
- You need an overall GPA [grade point AVERAGE] of 2.0 from all MSU classes to graduate. Therefore, if you have higher grades in other classes to compensate in the GPA calculation, you do not have to repeat unless you wish to do so.
