Opportunities for Study Abroad
Many opportunities exist to broaden your education by studying in countries other than the United States. MSU offers a range of programs in many countries. If you find a study abroad program offered by another institution, you will need to transfer those credits back into your MSU record. Meet with your advisor to discuss how to transfer these credits and how these credits will apply to your degree requirements.
Below is a list of links to help you find countries and projects that are currently available through MSU.
MSU Study Abroad Programs:
Courses from MSU sponsored programs are immediately part of your MSU record. Each program is a specific number of credits.
But, in many cases, a student may tailor the Study Abroad program to their individual curriculum. The program description will contain a list of courses. For example, a progran may list courses from specific departments (such as CJ or PLS) as well as IAH or ISS courses. While all the students on the program will be having the same experiences, and receiving the same number of credits, each stduent has the option of choosing different courses from that list to reflect those credits.
Some of those courses may be used to meet specific requirements. If an ISS 315 is offered, for example, and you need an ISS 300-level course, it might be possible to use that Study Aroad version for that requirement. Other courses will count as electives toward your degree. Electives are not empty credits. Remember that you need 120 or 123 credits to graduate and University, College and department requirements only take up a bit over 75 percent of your total.
Be sure to meet with your advisor to discuss how these credits will apply to your degree requirements.
